International engagement and sharing water management knowledge

Australia’s approach to managing the Murray–Darling Basin’s water resources is world leading.

Governments across the world are very interested in the work we're doing. Why? Because we're managing the Basin Plan, which is one of the only water management frameworks that help multiple governments work together.

We share our knowledge and experience on multi-jurisdictional water management with other countries because we’re focused on Rivers, for generations.

Our relationships

Our global activities focus on mutual learning. We specialise in managing water at basin scale. Yet, we also welcome new ideas and methods through collaboration.

We work in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) and the Australian Water Partnership.

We also partner with other river basin organisations on international water diplomacy.

International Engagement Strategy

The International Engagement Strategy 2021–2024 guides our work. The strategy lists the outcomes we seek from this investment in international engagement. It also covers priority regions and activities to achieve these goals.

Our main international engagement activities include:

Delegations and visits

We regularly host delegations and study tours throughout the Basin with water managers and leaders from across the globe.

Our people also present their knowledge and expertise on water resource management practice and policy development at events and forums.
