The outcomes from this workshop are being used to inform our thinking as we continue our work on the Basin Plan Review.
The workshop was an opportunity to:
- gather and distil initial impressions on the Early Insights Paper
- host a panel discussion about how the Early Insights Paper supports the Review
- unpack what is meant by a ‘healthy Basin’.
Participants attending online and in person, were encouraged to:
- ask questions about our thinking and approach so far
- share their experiences and perspectives on key Basin issues
- collaborate and suggest ideas for what else we should consider as part of the 2026 Basin Plan Review.
Some of the key takeaways from the workshop included:
First impressions of the Early Insights Paper were positive.
There was support for moving beyond ‘just add water’ towards a more integrated approach to managing land and water together.
A healthy Basin can mean different things to different people.
There was support for the recognition of differing complexities between the northern Basin and the highly regulated southern Basin.
There was support for better recognition and involvement of First Nations people in water management.
There were concerns about native fish populations and how the Basin Plan Review will address native fish recovery.
Engagement fatigue continues to be a challenge.
More information about the session, including further feedback from participants is captured in River Reflections Conference 2024 – Early Insights Paper Workshop Report.
