The MDBA has analysed water recovery in 41 communities across the southern Murray–Darling Basin as of 31 October 2016 as part of its interim Basin Plan Evaluation and found that water recovery through infrastructure has generated 224 GL in water savings for farmers and the environment.

The Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) was established to implement and monitor the Basin Plan — a plan that is about ensuring a healthy and productive river system for future generations.
The MDBA commissioned a project in 2013 to identify the types of rules and resource condition limits (RCLs) that jurisdictions could use in water resource plans to manage the site-specific impacts of groundwater take and to provide a suggested framework on how an assessment of the need for rules can be undertaken.
