Media statement: Murray–Darling Basin Plan amendment update

Published: 1 November 2016

The Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) has determined that a change to the Basin Plan will be proposed for public consultation later this year.

The proposed amendments to the Basin Plan include changing the northern basin water recovery target and some groundwater water recovery targets. Some technical updates are also proposed.

The MDBA is currently consulting with basin governments to finalise a proposal concerning the northern basin water recovery target that balances the needs of communities, industries and environment in securing a healthy and productive basin for future generations.

When feedback from basin governments is finalised the MDBA plans to make the proposed amendments available to the public on Tuesday, 22 November, 2016.

The MDBA will extend the minimum eight week consultation period required by the Basin Plan to 11 weeks to take account of the Christmas period.

This will give communities, individuals and Ministers time to provide feedback.

The MDBA will promote this consultation closer to the time of the amendments release.
