Giving rivers in the southern Murray–Darling Basin the best chance to thrive in the long-term relies on the final pieces of the Basin Plan being implemented, a national water conference heard today.

The Murray–Darling Basin is the largest and most complex river system in Australia. It covers 1 million square kilometres of south-eastern Australia, across New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory.

We reviewed the impacts of the Basin Plan in the northern Basin. This review resulted in a proposal to amendments to the Basin Plan. These amendments became law in July 2018.

We are working collaboratively to implement the Basin Plan. Working with Basin states, communities and key stakeholders is crucial in achieving a sustainable system.
