2017 Basin Plan Evaluation reports

The 2017 Basin Plan Evaluation considers environmental, social, cultural and economic outcomes seen so far, and whether these outcomes are in line with what was expected 5 years before. A series of technical reports providing in-depth analysis and results have been developed.

For summary of the findings and recommendations, see Basin Plan Evaluation 2017.

Data sets from the evaluation are available from the Australian Government website data.gov.au.

Basin Plan Evaluation 2017 – Social and economic technical overview

Economic and social change in Basin communities and industries is determined by many inter-related causes. The Basin Plan water recovery may be one of those causes of change. To separate the Basin Plan effects from all the other causes of change, the Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) developed a new modelling approach. This technical report describes the MDBA modelling approach and the many different data sources used to interpret the modelling results. The report also outlines the limitations with this analysis and considers the implications for future social and economic analysis by the MDBA.

Understanding change in Basin communities

Separating the Basin Plan from all the other causes of change in southern Basin communities required the development of a new, innovative modelling approach. New social and economic datasets were necessary for supporting this scale of modelling, together with an improved way for describing changes in dairying. The independent review of the social and economic modelling was critical to informing and examining the overall approach employed by the MDBA.
