The Hydrometric Networks and Remote Sensing Program was completed in September 2024 in collaboration with the New South Wales and Queensland Governments, the Bureau of Meteorology, Geoscience Australia, and the Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA). It offers enhanced water monitoring systems and improved access to accurate water data for licence holders, compliance officers, and the community.

When establishing the Basin Plan it was determined that a portion of surface water and groundwater entitlements should be recovered and retained in the system, to improve the health of rivers, wetlands and groundwater systems. This is known as the water recovery target, and is a long-term average.

Basin state governments develop water resource plans. We work closely with Basin state governments to ensure water resource plans meet the requirements of the Basin Plan, and address the local requirements of water resource management.
