The Murray–Darling Water and Environment Research Program (MD-WERP) hydrology theme focuses on developing reliable knowledge of the characteristics and movement of water, under current and future climates, to inform water resources management and planning.

Murray–Darling Basin Authority committees, working groups and advisory panels formed under Section 203 of the Water Act 2007 (Cth).
The Southern Connected Basin Environmental Watering Committee was established in 2014. It supports the coordination of the delivery of water for the environment in the Southern Connected Basin and in particular in the River Murray system, consistent with the Basin Plan, and across multiple environmental water holders and jurisdictions.

The Northern Basin Environmental Watering Group was established in 2019 to co-ordinate the planning and delivery of water for the environment in the northern Basin to enhance connectivity and improve environmental outcomes.
The 2024 Native Fish Forum took place in Canberra from 25 to 27 March. The 3-day event was presented by Finterest in partnership with the MDBA.
