The Authority discussed high-level outcomes in a report on the Basin Leadership Summit hosted by the MDBA in mid-April. Approximately 120 leaders convened, bringing a diversity of perspectives from environment, natural resource management, First Nations, science, tourism, agriculture, irrigation and local government.

Members agreed the open, constructive and collaborative conversation deepened understanding of these perspectives, and furthered prospects for agreement on how different groups can work collectively and effectively to progress a healthy Basin and healthy communities. This report will soon be published on the MDBA website.

The Authority met with the Sustainable Rivers Audit and Outlook First Nations Leadership Group (SRAO FNLG) to discuss the group's progress including draft protocols that have been developed to support cultural safety and working ethically with First Nations peoples.

An update on progress in water resource plans (WRPs) was provided to the Authority. New South Wales WRPs are progressing and there are now 12 plans accredited, 4 in assessment and 4 back with New South Wales Government for further drafting. Accreditation of all WRPs remains a priority.

The Authority finalised the Basin Plan Review Early Insights Paper to be launched at the MDBA’s River Reflections Conference in Albury New South Wales on 19 and 20 June. The paper provides insight into the approach the Authority will take to the 2026 Basin Plan Review.

The Authority welcomed updates from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water Deputy Secretary, Ms Lyn O’Connell, from Mr Mitchell Isaacs, Chief Knowledge Officer from the New South Wales Government and Mr Daniel Blacker, A/g Inspector-General of Water Compliance.

The Authority received updates from senior staff on the current operational, strategic, and broader influences impacting the MDBA. Reports of the current water resource availability and key water management activities regarding MDBA river operations were noted.

The Authority noted a public expression of interest recruitment process will commence in May 2024 to fill Basin Community Committee member vacancies arising on 31 March 2025.

All members were present, except for Professor Stuart Bunn who was an apology.
