The Basin Plan aims to strike a balance between access to water for Basin communities, while also providing water for the environment, for the benefit of all Australians.

While the central River Murray catchment only covers about 3% of the Basin, many of the Basin’s major tributaries run into the River Murray through this unique region.

The Basin Plan introduced a new water accounting and compliance framework based on sustainable diversion limits (SDL) that began on 1 July 2019.

This year Regional Engagement Officer (REO) Peter celebrates 6 incredible years in his role in the Basin. His presence in the Macquarie–Castlereagh and Lachlan catchments has been key to the Murray–Darling Basin Authority’s (MDBA) ongoing connections with communities.

From 27 February to 1 March, Authority Chair Sir Angus Houston, Chief Executive Andrew McConville, and Authority member Jane Doolan led the first MDBA tour of 2024, meeting with people in the northern Basin.
