In 2019, the MDBA undertook a detailed survey of the River Murray channel through the Barmah–Millewa Reach. This revealed the presence of a very large quantity of sand on the bed of the river, something that was not expected. Since then, several further studies have been undertaken to investigate the extent and source of the sand, the rate that it is moving at and options to manage it. Reports of these studies are provided below.

The pool level at Euston Weir is temporarily being lowered to allow for works to repair damage sustained during last year’s flooding.

The Murray–Darling Basin Authority and Goulburn–Murray Water will begin to remove the weir at Mildura next week to allow for high flows expected to arrive in coming weeks.

The pool level at Euston weir is temporarily being raised before being drawn down again to complete repair works to minor damage sustained during recent flooding.
The weir pool on the River Murray at Mildura will return to its usual level over the coming week as work to reinstate the Mildura weir nears completion.
Work is underway by the Murray–Darling Basin Authority and Goulburn–Murray Water to reinstate the Mildura weir and lock 11.

The Euston weir and lock 15 will be reinstated next week as high flows in the River Murray continue to recede.
