Presenting the keynote address at the Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) River Reflections Conference in Albury, Mr Jarvis AM encouraged all who value the Basin to focus on the outcome shared at our very core.
“My expeditions across Antarctica have taught me about myself, how I respond as a leader, a follower and indeed how others act under pressure and rise to the challenge,” Mr Jarvis said.
“Whether it’s navigating 2,800 km of frozen terrain or charting the future of Basin water management in the face of climate change – each expedition starts with the outcome in mind and we work back from there.
“The journey will present obstacles and it is how we listen and collaborate to work through each obstacle that is important. It all comes down to trust.
“Planning for the uncertainties that come with climate change in the Murray–Darling Basin may seem rife with challenge and complexity. Adaptability, good teamwork, collaborative leadership, and a focus on outcomes will ensure we lay the pathway to success.”
MDBA Chief Executive Andrew McConville said the Authority is committed to an inclusive and collaborative approach to managing the Basin's water resources now and into the future.
"The MDBA has thrown the doors open on how we are developing the evidence, testing the options and focusing on outcomes through our preparations for the Basin Plan Review,” Mr McConville said.
“It is essential that we bring together diverse perspectives and ideas to ensure the long-term health of the Basin and the sustainability of communities and industries that call it home.
“Managing Basin water resources is certainly complex. We must find the areas we agree on and commit to working through our differences. All this, as we review the plan and deliver on our shared purpose – rivers for generation.”
The River Reflections conference features speaker sessions, panel discussions, case studies, and workshops, focused on key themes such as water management, environmental sustainability, First Nations water and community engagement.
