Native fish are reappearing in areas of the Murray–Darling Basin where they were believed to be locally extinct or critically endangered.

The Lower Darling was subject to tragic fish death events in December 2018 and January 2019. The large fish death events covered a 40 kilometre stretch of the Darling River, downstream of Menindee Lakes. 

The health of native fish in the Murray−Darling Basin is a vital legacy that we leave for future generations. Releasing water for the environment helps to restore native fish populations so all of us can benefit from healthy rivers.

Basin governments, community, First Nations, recreational fishers and scientists have developed the Native Fish Recovery Strategy.

Basin state governments have prepared an Emergency Response Plan for the 2019–20 summer to ensure actions are coordinated and resources available to respond quickly to address risks to fish populations.

The Murray–Darling Basin Authority's Chief Executive, Phillip Glyde, welcomed the announcement that environmental water holders will be using water bought to benefit the environment in the coming weeks.
