This is a review of the hydrological models that underpin the Barwon-Darling Watercourse water resource plan that was submitted to the Murray–Darling Basin Authority in June 2020. The 2 most important of these models were the Baseline Diversion Limit model and the Annual Permitted Take model. This review was prepared to assist the Murray–Darling Basin Authority in their appraisal of the Barwon-Darling Watercourse water resource plan prior to its accreditation and implementation under the Basin Plan.

In 2019, the MDBA undertook a detailed survey of the River Murray channel through the Barmah–Millewa Reach. This revealed the presence of a very large quantity of sand on the bed of the river, something that was not expected. Since then, several further studies have been undertaken to investigate the extent and source of the sand, the rate that it is moving at and options to manage it. Reports of these studies are provided below.

The River Murray Water Quality Monitoring Program has captured physical and chemical data from 28 River Murray and tributary sites since 1978. This report examines long-term trends in water quality and drivers of change.

The Murray–Darling Basin Authority is moving ahead with detailed design work on a suite of options to improve the movement of water through the Barmah–Millewa Reach of the Murray River.

The Barmah Choke has a default trade restriction in place. This is necessary to protect water delivery to existing water entitlement holders and maintain the river environment in the Choke.

In response to the declining flow capacity, the increasing risks, and the recommendation that a range of intervention measures be investigated, the MDBA instigated the Barmah–Millewa Feasibility Study (BMFS). Six options were investigated as part of the Barmah–Millewa Feasibility Study.
