Water resource plans are an integral part of implementing the Basin Plan. They set new rules on how much water can be taken from the system, ensuring the sustainable diversion limit is not exceeded over time.

In May 2020, the MDBA released its Sustainable diversion limit accounting improvement strategy 2020–2025, in response to the findings and recommendations of the SDL accounting ‘health check’ – independent panel review in 2019.

The Basin Plan must be evaluated every 5 years. This includes evaluating the effectiveness of the implementation of the Plan, as well evaluating the outcomes of the Plan.

Guiding the planning of the 2025 Basin Plan Evaluation is the Framework for the 2025 Basin Plan Evaluation and the 2025 Basin Plan Evaluation Roadmap.

Each year, as part of the Basin Plan's monitoring and evaluation program, Basin governments report on how they are implementing different elements of the Basin Plan.
