Following amendments to the Water Act 2007 (Cth) and the Basin Plan 2012, the Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) is no longer responsible for enforcing compliance with the Basin Plan. This responsibility was transferred to the Inspector-General of Water Compliance on 5 August 2021.
Submissions by the MDBA made prior to this date have not been amended to reflect this change in role and should be considered in this context.

On October 30th 2024, the Inspector-General of Water Compliance (IGWC) announced an inquiry into the Northern Basin Toolkit. The Northern Basin Toolkit is a suite of six policy/management and infrastructure measures identified in the Northern Basin Review that are designed to maximise environmental outcomes in the northern Basin. The inquiry is expected to make findings and recommendations in relation to:
The IGWC’s call for submissions included Terms of Reference and outlined a range of questions on which views and information were sought. Submissions were requested to include supporting evidence where possible. This submission is in response to this call having regard to the inquiry Terms of Reference and relevant supporting evidence. Submissions closed on the 29th November 2024. |

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission Murray–Darling Basin water markets inquiry | ||||

On 7 August 2019, the Australian Government announced that it would direct the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to conduct an inquiry into markets for tradeable water rights in the Murray–Darling Basin. The ACCC’s inquiry consulted with a wide range of water market participants and other persons involved in water markets in the Murray–Darling Basin. The ACCC released an issues paper on 17 October 2019 seeking views on the key issues affecting markets for tradeable water rights in the Murray–Darling Basin. The ACCC released an interim report on 30 July 2020 and released its final report on 26 March 2021. |
