Over recent years there have been significant changes in water use on the River Murray between Barmah and the South Australian border. This study investigates the changes historical data shows over time.
These changes include:
- expansion in permanent horticulture in the Sunraysia region
- recovery of water for the environment
- increased trade of water from the Murrumbidgee and Goulburn rivers to the Murray, and
- increased flows to SA due to trade and environmental flows.
These changes have resulted in community concern that the river system will not be able to meet the changes in demand placed upon it.
This study looks at changes in irrigated crop types in the Lower Murray and South Australia. It also analyses changes in:
- consumptive use along the River Murray between Barmah and the South Australia border
- deliveries to the South Australia border.
