In April 2008, the Murray–Darling Basin Commission purchased 10,423 megalitres of water from a private storage in Queensland to provide water across the border to the Narran Lakes in northern NSW. The water was purchased to sustain water levels in the Lakes system during a rare bird-breeding event that was judged to be at risk.
