The Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) operates the River Murray to share water between New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, as required under the Murray–Darling Basin Agreement. To undertake this work the MDBA has built, maintained and operated a hydrological model of the River Murray.
Since 2003, a 3-yearly assessment of irrigation area mapping has been undertaken for the Lower Murray and Lower Darling River systems to track the changes in land use since the Millennium drought. From 2021 this mapping area has been extended to include the Edward/Kolety–Wakool River system. The mapping provides information about how irrigated land use is changing over time, highlighting changes in area, location and crop types. This information is then used to update and maintain the hydrological model of the River Murray. The following reports describe the mapping and findings undertaken from 2003 to 2021.
