Annual assurance reports – sustainable diversion limit adjustment mechanism

We play a key role in monitoring the integrity of sustainable diversion limits and the operation of the sustainable diversion limit adjustment mechanism (SDLAM).

The Water Amendment (Restoring our Rivers) Bill 2023 commenced on 7 December 2023, and extended the deadline for SDLAM project delivery to 31 December 2026. It also allows for new SDLAM projects to be notified to 30 June 2025, and existing projects to be amended or withdrawn to 30 June 2026. Previous legislative settings required projects to be in place by 30 June 2024.

Annual reporting of sustainable diversion limit adjustment mechanism program implementation focuses on assessing whether projects will be operable, and if they’re on track to deliver the anticipated environmental outcomes.

Independent assurance report – Sustainable Diversion Limit Adjustment Mechanism

The MDBA has previously prepared five SDLAM annual reports, including three assurance reports, the last of these were published in July 2023.

In 2024, an Independent Assessment of SDLAM projects was undertaken on behalf of the Australia Government. It is a comprehensive review of the progress of all current SDLAM projects up to June 2024. This report can be found on the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water’s website.

This report represents the most up to date information on project progress and likely completion at this point in time. The MDBA remains committed to providing transparency on project progress and will produce an assurance report in 2025.
