This work is planned by the Murray Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) to maintain safety during flood flows.
The weir at Lock 8, near the Victorian-South Australian border will be removed on Wednesday 5 October, followed by the weir at Euston (lock 15) on Thursday 6 October.
The weirs at Lake Cullulleraine (lock 9) and at Wentworth (lock 10) are expected to be removed in mid to late-October, depending on the rate of rise of the river.
Executive Director of River Management, David Dreverman, said the weirs would be fully opened at a time when the upstream and downstream river levels were almost the same, resulting in minimal impacts on river users.
"People should also note that in each case the river will remain open to boat traffic initially through the lock chambers, but if levels continue to rise use of navigable passes through the weirs may be required. Navigation markers at each weir will guide skippers of vessels wishing to pass through the weir," Mr Dreverman said.
"This work is standard response to higher flows down the Murray, and follows successful operations to remove the Mildura weir."
"It is likely that river levels will remain high into November."
"Thanks to significant investment over the last decade to improve flood operations, removal of each weir will be safe and relatively quick, requiring less than a day to complete."
"The weirs will be reinstated once the high flows finish, with the date dependent on the actual recession of flood flows."
The MDBA will issue further advice as needed. Information is also available in the River Murray Weekly Report.
