Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) commended for performance in managing River Murray

An independent review has given the tick of approval to the MDBA’s decisions in managing the River Murray during 2022–23.

Published: 5 March 2024

Each year, the MDBA releases an annual summary of river operations. It describes the operating conditions and river operations from the previous water year.

The Independent River Operations Review Group (IRORG) uses this information to assess the MDBA’s ability to manage and operate the River Murray system.

IRORG also interviews state government officials, and can make recommendations about improvements to river operations, the objectives and outcomes and future Annual Operating Outlooks.

The public release of the two reports this month underpins the Authority’s commitment to transparency.

  • River Murray System Annual Summary of River Operations 2022–23
  • Independent River Operations Review Group’s (IRORG) Review of Performance Against the Objectives and Outcomes 2022–23.

The 2022–23 water year presented unique challenges, marked by Australia’s third consecutive La Niña event, resulting in wet conditions across the Basin and widespread flooding.

Despite these challenges, IRORG found the MDBA successfully:

  • monitored the River Murray system performance closely and responded appropriately with adjustments to operations
  • managed the high inflows - exceeding double the previous year's levels and placing it among the wettest 4% of years historically recorded
  • implemented flood operations at major infrastructure points such as Dartmouth Dam, Hume Dam, and Yarrawonga Weir.

This review marks the 3rd year running that the MDBA has been commended for its performance in managing the River Murray System, and compliance with the objectives and outcomes document.
