Funds will help support important cultural activities for students of the isolated community of Goodooga.

Murray–Darling Basin Authority representatives recently travelled to a remote area in northern New South Wales to present Goodooga Central School with a cheque which will go towards funding various cultural projects.

This was the fourth year we have raised money on behalf of Goodooga Central School, after they were identified as our National Reconciliation Week fundraising partner in the 2019–2021 Reconciliation Action Plan.

Goodooga is located in the Brewarrina Shire on the eastern bank of the Bokhara River, approximately 20 kilometres from the Queensland border. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ most recent Census results, the area has a population of less than 300 people, with just over 40 school-aged children in the community.

Victor Smiles of the Murray–Darling Basin Authority visits Goodooga, New South Wales.

During the school visit, our Engagement Officers played games to help educate students about how water travels through the Basin and how much of that water is available for use. They also taught the children about why it is important to take care of the environment and leave a sustainable amount of water in the river.

Engagement officer, Lucy Seville, said it was a wonderful and energising opportunity for the team to visit the township and educate the students about the significance of the Murray–Darling Basin.

“The experience gave us the chance to not only teach children in the Basin about the value of water and our role as the Murray–Darling Basin Authority, but also about how our work impacts local regions,” she said.

At the end of the visit, students were presented with activity bags which included posters, games, and stickers so they could continue their environmental education back in the classroom.
