Mitta Mitta Flow Advice – 31 October 2022

Landholders and river users, including pumpers, on the Mitta Mitta River are advised to take into account the forecast releases of water from Dartmouth Dam and make any necessary adjustment to their river activities.

Published: 31 October 2022

Dartmouth storage increased above the Full Supply Level (FSL) of 486 m AHD and water began flowing over the spillway on 23rd September 2022. The storage remains above FSL and flow over the spillway is currently near 10,000 ML/day.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) is currently forecasting widespread rain totals between 50-100 mm for the Dartmouth catchment on the 8-day rainfall outlook. Inflows to Dartmouth Dam are expected to rise as a result of the forecast rain. As such, the flow over the spillway is expected to increase over the coming days.

The river level at Tallandoon is currently above channel capacity (3.4 m). Current flows at Tallandoon are approximately 14,600 ML/day and rising in response to recent rainfall.  With further rainfall forecast, from early Monday 31/10/2022 Tallandoon flows are expected to increase above the minor flood level (4.2 m or 15,200 ML/day).

Landholders and river users on the Mitta Mitta are advised to regularly check the current flows and forecasts on the BOM website weather warnings for more information on levels on the Mitta Mitta river.

The Bureau of Meteorology is responsible for flood forecasting. With flows approaching minor flood level, as per previous advice, the MDBA will no longer produce flow forecasts and information should instead be accessed from the Bureau of Meteorology:

If you need assistance, please contact your local SES. Download the Vic Emergency App, and set your flood watch zone.

Summary information about the River Murray system is available in River Murray Weekly reports.

If you are observing bank erosion around key assets on your property, as a result of the higher river flows, please call the North-East Catchment Management Authority.  They implement a riparian program in conjunction with the MDBA.
