The MDBA regularly updates its operational scenario planning with the latest observation and forecast of system inflows and climate conditions.
The ongoing dry conditions have meant Murray system inflows in November and December 2019 and so far in January 2020, have remained very low. This has placed increased reliance on Hume Reservoir to help supply the length of the River Murray System.
To assist with managing Hume Reservoir levels through the remainder of summer and autumn, bulk transfers from Dartmouth will be increased.
Based on current system condition and forecasts, the target transfer volume for January has been increased from 100 GL to 120 GL. Releases will be made in a varied manor, reaching a peak of 6,600 ML/day and a low of 4,000 ML/day which is planned to coincide with the Australia Day long weekend. There remains a possibility that the current planned release strategy may change if bushfire activity in the area escalates and or conditions turn wet.
Looking forward, operational scenario planning indicates that if the current dry conditions continue, transfers of these volumes or potentially higher are expected to continue in February and March. Conversely, transfers may be decreased if significant rainfall improves system inflows. System conditions will be monitored and transfers from Dartmouth adjusted as required.
