Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) Chair, the Hon Neil Andrew AO, said the Basin Community Committee was a critical consultation tool to assist in implementation of the Basin Plan.
"The Basin Community Committee provides people with the drive and enthusiasm for their community and catchment with a unique opportunity to provide advice on water resource management to the Authority and Basin governments," Mr Andrew said.
"I really value working with the community representatives on the Basin Community Committee. They provide us insights into what is happening on the ground and we get honest advice about what's occurring with Basin Plan implementation and water resources and what might need improving.
"The Basin Plan is about making sure the Basin's water resources are well managed in the long term interests of the environment, our communities and our industries.
"As we progressively move from implementing the Basin Plan to monitoring compliance and measuring outcomes—the Basin Community Committee will be key to ensuring community observations, voices and experiences are heard and importantly influence arrangements.
"We want community members with expertise or interest in Aboriginal water resource matters, local community issues, local government, environmental water management, and irrigated agriculture to put their hands up for the Basin Community Committee."
The Basin Community Committee currently meets face to face 3-4 times per year. It is an advisory committee established under the Water Act 2007. Members will be appointed by the MDBA for three-year terms commencing mid-2018.
Expressions of Interest will open on 25 September 2017 for a period of six weeks, closing on 3 November 2017.
