Euston lock re-opens and weir pool levels to vary

Published: 16 February 2017

Euston's Lock 15 reopened this week following a month of work to repair a damaged lock gate.

The Murray–Darling Basin Authority's (MDBA) executive director of river management, David Dreverman, said boats were now able to access the lock as usual.

"Work to fix the gate by WaterNSW together with a small SA Water team from Berri was done as quickly as possible to limit the inconvenience to local people and tourists. We are grateful for the patience of those people who have been wanting to make use of the lock," Mr Dreverman said.

"WaterNSW used divers to check all the other lock gates and no other issues have been identified."

Mr Dreverman also reminded landholders and river users that the regular program to vary the water levels at several River Murray weir pools was continuing.

"Changes to the height of the weir pool at Euston and at locks 9, 8 and 7 between Wentworth and the South Australian border has become a standard part of river management over the past two years.

"We are moving away from always keeping the weir pools at a constant height, in order to restore a more natural wetting and drying cycle to benefit the local riverine environment."

Mr Dreverman said that management of water levels would take into account important recreational events, such as the Robinvale Classic water ski race in March.

The program to restore a more natural wetting and drying cycle is conducted by the MDBA in cooperation with the NSW Department of Primary Industries, Water NSW, SA Water and the Mallee Catchment Management Authority.

River users wanting more information on weir pool heights are advised to subscribe to updates in the River Murray weekly report or contact the MDBA on (02) 6279 0100.
