Hello everyone, it’s been an exciting month here at the MDBA.

NAIDOC Week has been a focus of our efforts and celebrations, with its theme 'For Our Elders'.

In First Nations communities, Elders have an obligation to hold and pass on their cultural knowledge. Knowledge is handed down– generation to generation – as it has been done for many thousands of years, Elders are the reason ancient knowledge and practices are still alive today.

Management of water in the Basin of course began since time immemorial with the First Nations people. Their practices struck a balance between the natural environment and the sustainability of Country – they used only what they needed.

The MDBA took the opportunity to celebrate NAIDOC Week across all our offices in the Basin – exploring language and history.

We remain deeply committed to working closely with Traditional Owners and First Nations organisations to improve their input into water management in the Basin.

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending the Murray–Darling Water and Environment Research Program (MDWERP) Annual Symposium in Canberra.

Researchers shared their progress on projects that are underway with policy-makers from State and Commonwealth agencies. This important work will be a critical part of how we improve policy and lead to better environmental, social, economic and cultural outcomes in the Basin.

We also launched our new website this month, making it easier for you to find what you’re looking for, and for us to engage with you – take a look and let us know what you think through our contact form.
