Chief Executive update – April 2023

Published: 25 April 2023

Watch this month's update from our Chief Executive, Andrew McConville.

One of the most inspiring parts of my job is to get into the heart of the Murray–Darling Basin to see and meet the variety of people who call the Basin home.  On the recent listening tour of southern Queensland, I had the great opportunity to visit communities at Moree, Inglewood, Texas, Stanthorpe, Warwick and Toowoomba.

The listening tours are just that – the Murray–Darling Basin Authority getting out to hear perspectives on water management and other important issues first-hand. This direct engagement – with local communities, First Nations, irrigators, farmers, tourism operators and others – ensures we continue to be well informed about their needs and expectations, and that knowledge feeds into our work.

Expressions of interest have been announced by Minister Plibersek to fill up to 8 positions on the Basin Community Committee (BCC), which provides highly valued advice to the Ministerial Council and the MDBA.  The closing date for applications is Thursday 11 May 2023 and the 3-year appointments will start early next year.

You can lodge your application through the MDBA’s careers website.

Our River reflections conference taking place on 14 and 15 June in Narrabri, New South Wales, enables people living and working across the Basin to come together to exchange knowledge and ideas, and to listen to an excellent line-up of speakers.  The River reflections page on our website has more information about the 2-day program of activities. I encourage you to take a look.

Since my last update, the Murray–Darling Basin Authority met on Ngunnawal country in Canberra to discuss key issues affecting the Basin. A copy of the communique from that meeting is on our website.  The Authority will come together again in Canberra in mid-May.

Until next time, please stay safe and enjoy getting out and about in the Basin if you can.
